Ebook review “Making Money from Travel Web Sites”

Sounds like everybody’s dream, right? Traveling and living from it. Not to work to be able to travel, instead to live and travel, financing your life by the same travel that makes your life worth living. Sounds like a sales pitch, right? Or is it your dream also? The here reviewed ebook was downloaded from a site with the delightful name “Retire young and wealthy” (web address at the end of the article). So what is behind the sales pitch? First of all, before I get into the nitty-gritty detail of a review: Yes, this ebook is worth downloading! It could be improved with some re-writing, but the basic information is there and the information is sound and good. For the download link, see end of article. The book is free and contains valuable information, so go for it! Now the review proper:

Mike, the author, has managed a difficult task, to put together an extensive, 51 pages, ebook that covers a wide array of subjects regarding web site building and monetizing these web sites. The layout is clear and the font is easy to read, something a lot of people overlook when creating their fancy looking ebooks. The Table of Contents gives the whole project a professional look, but unfortunately the titles are not linked to the chapters, making it a bit of a scroll up and down experience when reading it the second or third time. Also the web site address on the bottom of each page is not clickable, costing Mike for sure some visitors as the book goes around the internet.
A very nice touch is the lack of a sales pitch! This book provides the basic information you need to start to build web sites for profit and doesn’t try to sell you “further secrets”. There are a few affiliate / referral links to recommended services and web sites, but nothing else. Nothing you have to buy into to get more, needed, information. The layout is nice, with only one picture, the cover so to speak. I don’t know, but perhaps having a little pic for each chapter might liven things a bit more up. Especially as I always connect Travel with photography, but that might be just me.  To round the lay out review a bit up, I would strongly suggest next time to let a second person proof read the book. It is not really bad, but there are still some typos, page breaks that went wrong and punctuation that could be improved. Don’t do your own proof reading. Only very few people I know, can distance themselves so far from the text they wrote, to read what is written and not to read what they wanted to write.  Now to the content proper:

The first time I opened the book it was like “Making money from travel web sites”??? That should be a niche and not 51 pages long!!! After I read this book a couple of times, I smiled and thought ‘It is written like a blog, not like a book.’ Nothing wrong with being a blogger ;-) but when it comes to preparing your content for an ebook, not a blog, then it is better if you start to think like a writer -and like a ebook reader!- and not like a blogger! The content is great, but it really could do with some condensing and streamlining. Or perhaps it would be even better broken down in 2-3 ebooks, on the lines of “Making Travel Web Sites”, “Promoting Travel Web Sites” and “Monetizing Travel Web Sites”. You even could give the first one away for free *Warning: Evil Thought* >>> and sell the other two.  I would also add a glossary to explain all the “funny internet terms” like ftp and html.
Another think that could do with improving is to concentrate more on the “How to” and less on the “Why and What”. Some simple recipes to “cook” a web site up would have been nice. Also the idea of “niche” is coming a bit too short. Remember a web site about “Travel America” is harder to make successful then “Travel Riding Holidays in Vermont”.
To finish it of, there is something I learnt from this ebook and that really got me thinking. That is the tip of carrying always a sound recording device with you during your research for your travel web site. It made ideas spring to my mind, like recording the sound of ocean waves on a lonely beach or the old folk songs performed during a festival. There are more points I could mention, but you should really go ahead and download the ebook and read for yourself:
